Chronic Care AT GENESIS MEDICA

Managing Long-Term Diseases

Chronic diseases are ones that last a year or longer and require ongoing medical treatment and/or lifestyle changes. They are the leading cause of disability and death in the U.S. Examples include:
  • Allergies and asthma
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Arthritis
  • Cancer
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Thyroid and other hormone imbalances

The goal of our chronic care practice is to diagnose and treat these long-term diseases to relieve your symptoms and prevent potentially serious complications from developing.

SYMPTOMS AND DIAGNOSIS

With a chronic disease, you might not have any symptoms, particularly in the early stages, which is why it’s important to have your annual checkups. Do come in for an evaluation if your experience symptoms such as chronic pain, unexpected weight loss or gain, fatigue, chest pain, frequent urination, breathing problems, swelling, hair or skin changes, memory or mood issues. Diagnosis includes reviewing your symptoms and medical history and a physical exam that might use blood, urine, or breathing tests, and X-rays or other imaging procedures.

SYMPTOMS AND DIAGNOSIS

A chronic disease can develop in anyone, but certain factors increase your risk, such as:

  • Being overweight or obese
  • Excess alcohol use
  • Family history of chronic disease
  • Genetics
  • Physical inactivity
  • Poor eating habits
  • Smoking
  • Stress

You’ll lower your risk by not smoking, exercising regularly, keeping a healthy weight eating lots of fruits and vegetables, and limiting sugar, saturated fat, and alcohol intake.

Even though chronic diseases can last a lifetime, a personalized chronic disease management plan can lessen the risk of further complications, such as heart attack, nerve and organ damage, stroke, and foot or eye problems. For patients of all ages, our goal is to restore their quality of life and maximize their life expectancy.
