Managing High Blood Pressure

Hypertension, also called high blood pressure, is largely without symptoms, yet can increase your risk of: heart attack, stroke, angina (chest pain), sexual dysfunction, kidney disease, vision loss, and heart failure. Nearly half of all adult Americans have high blood pressure. However, it may be years before you see its effects on your system, so it’s important to check it regularly. Simply have our staff take your blood pressure reading when you come in for a physical or other medical checkup.

ABOUT THE CONDITION

The heart muscle contracts with every heartbeat, pumping blood through the arteries, circulating it throughout your system. That pumping causes the blood to exert a force against the walls of blood vessels. The blood pressure reading shows one number over another. The top one is your systolic pressure—the force of blood against vessel walls generated when the heart contracts. The bottom number is your diastolic pressure—the reduced force of the blood against vessels between contractions. Elevated blood pressure is 120-129 over 80 (or higher). High blood pressure is 130 over 80 or higher.

Treating Hypertension

If you get a high blood pressure reading, you should come back in a few weeks to check if it stays elevated. If it does, we can prescribe lifestyle changes and medications to reduce blood pressure and maintain it within safe parameters. Lifestyle fixes include a balanced, low-salt diet with moderate alcohol intake, as well as more physical activity and other measures to reduce stress.

In addition to contributing to other health problems, smoking raises blood pressure. Click here to go to our Smoking Cessation practice page to see the ways we can help you quit. Being overweight also increases blood pressure, so click here to go to our Weight Loss Management practice page to see how we can help you achieve a healthier size.
