A Growing Health Concern
There are more than 30 million Americans living with diabetes today—50% more people than 10 years ago. Diabetes either inhibits your body from producing an adequate amount of insulin, or prevents your body from properly using the insulin it produces. Insulin, a hormone the pancreas supplies, regulates your levels of blood sugar, and aids in converting blood sugar into energy.
TYPES OF DIABETES
The three primary types are:
- Type 1 diabetes: a more severe, but less prevalent, form of the disease in which the body does not produce enough insulin to keep blood sugar levels under control. Sometimes called juvenile diabetes, it is usually diagnosed in childhood.
- Type 2 diabetes: the most common form, in which the body produces insulin but it cannot effectively regulate blood sugar.
- Gestational diabetes: this type can occur during pregnancy from a reduction in normal insulin production, typically following the 20th week.
Diabetes Symptoms and Treatments
Type 1 diabetes is strongly linked to heredity, type 2 to being overweight and an inactive lifestyle. Many signs can point to diabetes: tiredness; greater than normal thirst; more frequent need to urinate; slow healing wounds and sores; more urinary tract infections; unexpected weight loss; and numbness in hands or feet. But people with diabetes may not experience any symptoms. The way to find out if you have it is for us check glucose levels at your annual physical.
At Genesis Medica, we treat each diabetes patient with a customized program of diet, exercise, and prescription medication if appropriate. There are effective ways to live with diabetes. A diet low in sugar and carbohydrates, combined with moderate exercise, such as walking, helps lower and control blood sugar. Some patients may take insulin or other medications too. If you’re concerned you may have diabetes, please make an appointment today for a precise diagnosis.
